“Other people’s creativity inspires me. Seeing a great art, or reading a fab book, or watching an interesting documentary or an exciting film. These things make me want to make me let my imagination fly.”
-Kate Cary
I often get asked where I get my style inspiration from. Honestly, I’m constantly being inspired by everything around me: blogs I read, colours I see, books, movies, everything and anything. One of my favourite ways to find inspiration is to watch fashion documentaries. They are a visual feast for the eyes, full of stimulating sounds, and it’s incredibly interesting to learn about behind the scenes of a seemingly inaccessible industry. There are several that I love and can watch anytime, but today I’m sharing my top five that inspire me the most (in no particular order!):
1: Mademoiselle C
This documentary goes behind the scenes of the fascinating life of Carine Roitfeld. Currently, she is the Editor in Chief of CR magazine; her life though has been all over the fashion world! Her sense of style and risk taking provides all sorts of inspiration.
2: Unzipped
You seriously cannot get any cuter than Isaac Mizrahi in the 90s, plus views of Kate Moss at the very beginning of her career. Isaac overcame some serious challenges to get where he is today, which makes for an interesting film! Plus the cinematography and music will give you major 90’s nostalgia when watching this documentary.
3: Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel
Mrs. Vreeland lived the most amazing long and beautiful life! Her memories and stories are unbelievable, and the film is narrated in her own charming voice. She had so much influence on the fashion world as we know it as you will see throughout the documentary.
4: Jeremy Scott The People’s Designer
I can’t believe this made it to my favourite’s list! I’ll be completely honest, I’m not a huge fan of his designs but I am a huge fan of how he does his own thing regardless of what the establishment wants from him. This documentary takes you into the thought process behind his designs, and his history from being a farm boy to head designer of Moschino!
5: Scatter My Ashes At Bergdorf’s
Have you ever wanted to know what happens behind the scenes of the most infamous department stores in the world? This documentary takes you in the history and legend of Bergdorf Goodmans. Light-hearted and full of amazing designers, this film will leave a smile on your face!
Do you ever watch fashion documentaries? I love to with a glass of wine in hand and a face mask for a me-night in! Give it a try sometime.
I need to watch these! I love the 90’s and it would be some major inspo! Thanks girl 🙂
They will make your heart so happy! Hugs, Kait
