Oversized: Couch cover or chic styling?

“Most people wear clothing that is too big or too small for them. And “oversized” is the downfall for most of us. We have to be careful we don’t look slipcovered!”

-Tim Gunn

Oh, Tim Gunn- ever the fashion sage! Oversized is popular for fall but can go frumpy rather quickly if you don’t style it properly. It’s a style that when done right, can not only be your coziest look, it can also be your chicest look yet.

Black & Oversized

This all black oversized look has been my go-to for going out this fall! Put on flats and a backpack purse and it’s a cozy casual look, with heels and a tote it’s perfect for brunch or a night out. Going this oversized can seem like a style challenge! I’ve got your back to take the leap though with my top three tips on how to go oversized without drowning or looking like a couch.

1: Don’t just go wide, go long!

To make the look work balance is key. This sweater works so well because it doesn’t just stop at my waist, the length keeps the width from being overbearing. The slip dress I layered here is so perfect for this! It adds length without adding bulk and compliments the large size of the sweater by bringing the eye in.

2: Keep oversized monochrome!

Stylists have been saying for years black is slimming, which can be true. Another slimming effect- even when going oversized is to keep your colours monochromatic! The best way to turn the look into a slipcover is to add a bright pattern; when going oversized keep it simple with solids and monochrome shades.

3: Size is a letter or number and doesn’t matter. Pay attention to how it fits!

Some items are created to have a large fit, others look great when you just upsize to a large fit. I can’t stress it enough whenever you’re shopping to ignore labels and go with what feels right! Some brands I’m an xxxxxxsmall and in others a xxxxxxxxxlarge. I don’t know why the fashion industry does this to us but it can be totally ignored- fashion and style are about you and not their numbers.

Like any style you chose to wear the best advice to follow is to just go for it! Sometimes the only thing holding us back is our own inhibitions. Let go and try something new! Are you a fan of the oversized look or just over it? I’d love to hear your opinion!

Cute post! I also think a heel always adds a slimming effect to complement an ‘oversized’ look!

Oversized knitwear is my favorite for fall! I love all your tips, especially about ignoring labels! I’ve bought sweaters in every size and it’s all about the fit, but it’s so easy to get hung up on the label. Such an important thing to keep in mind!!

This is such great advice Kait! Sizing is always so hard with different brands! I always try to go what feels right on my body. There is no reason to feel pressure to fit in a smaller sizer. Be proud of your body and who you are!
